Manuel Chantre est un artiste de l’art numérique. Il s’intéresse à la construction / déconstruction de symboles culturels afin de créer des univers aux atmosphères poignantes, hypnotiques et spontanées. Il développe ses performances et installations en intégrant la musique, l’art audio, la programmation et la vidéo.

Dans le cadre de ses performances audio-visuelles avec les projets Popcore ou Taxi Nouveau, il a utilisé différents objets de la culture populaire dont du maïs soufflé, des cartes de Noël musicales modifiées, des consoles de jeux vidéo et des poupées interactives. On associe sa musique aux sons de jeux vidéo (chiptune), en passant par l’électro, le noise, le minimal, le circuit bending, la musique électronique brésilienne et l’électroacoustique.

Chantre a créé une série d’installations audio-visuels et interactives conçues pour plus d’une vingtaine d’écrans de projection. « Dispergere Maiz », porte sur les symboliques du maïs alors que « Memorsion » traite des structures urbaines. Ses réalisations à la Société des arts technologiques (SAT) avec l’artiste Jean Ranger nourrissent son questionnement sur le langage narratif non linéaires permis par les dispositifs immersifs.

Il a également composé et fait la conception sonore de films de fictions, de dessins animés et d’installations architecturales notamment au sein de productions pour l’Office nationale du film du Canada, Moment Factory, le Métro de Montréal et d’autres organismes à Montréal.

En 2006, il initie la création du collectif d’art de performance audio-vidéo-robotique Popcore. Il est aussi un membre fondateur de Toy Company, un collectif d’artistes chiptune Montréal. Depuis, il a produit plusieurs événements pour ces deux regroupements.

Ses projets personnels ont été présentés lors de nombreux festivals internationaux et d’autres événements de la culture numérique au Canada, en Belgique, en France, aux Etats-Unis, en Suisse, en Hollande et à Taiwan.

Chantre est coordonnateur de formations à la SAT. Il a développé et donné des formations notamment en audio, en musique technologique, en performance vidéo et en installations immersives. Ses formations et ateliers sont destinés aux professionnels, aux enseignants, aux artistes, aux jeunes et au grand public.

Manuel Chantre détient un baccalauréat en anthropologie sociale et culturelle de l’Université Laval et un baccalauréat en beaux art et musique électroacoustique de l’Université Concordia. Il a également étudié l’électronique et la programmation.

DISPERGERE MAIZ, installation interactive, 2009

For Manuel Chantre, the construction and deconstruction of cultural symbols has always been a source of inspiration. His performances and installation has been characterized as an integration of music, audio art, programming, electronics, and video.

Alongside video artist Jean Ranger, Chantre has explored the various characteristics of storytelling within immersive installations. He also works with nonlinear narratives through his musical compositions and sound design. His collaborations have included “Réflexions / Réflections”, designed for a 360 degrees screen, as well as the film “Entre ciel et terre”, designed for a dome screen both developed at the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT).

Since 2009 he creates audiovisual installations made up of 24 video screens assembled to make a unique maze of video projections. “Dispergere Maiz” deals with the corn crop and its associated symbolism, while “Memorsion”, focuses on urban structures.

Inspired by the misappropriation of mass culture, Chantre founded the Popcore collective in 2006 in collaboration with the SAT weekly MixSessions events. Members of the collective (including Danny Perreault, Dimitri della Faille, Simon Laroche, and Jean-Ambroise Vesac) directly improvised with modified objects in order to employ them as musical and visual sources.

The final appearances of the collective were presented under the moniker Popcore Duo. Chantre and Laroche created a new genre of “participative-noise-narrative” performance. The performances are based on the deconstruction of a robotic body (Popcore Duo), a « mashup » of contemporary rituals (Popcontinental) and a dual in which the public is set in the middle of the arena (Polypingpop).

Chantre is known through his musical performance project Taxi Nouveau. He is also a founding member of the Toy Company, a Montreal’s chiptune/8bit music collective.

As a performer, Chantre has used popcorn, modified musical Christmas cards, video game consoles, interactive dolls, interactive speakers and other objects as sound and visual sources.

In addition to his projects and explorations, Chantre has honed his techniques as a composer and sound designer while working on fiction films, animations, architectural installations, documentaries and various performance projects. He has worked on various productions for the National Film Board of Canada, Moment Factory, and the Montreal Science Centre.

His personal projects have been presented at numerous international festivals and cultural events held in Canada, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Holland, in Taiwan and the United States.

Chantre is also coordinator for the educational division of the SAT. He develops and teaches various courses and workshops notably audio production, electronic music production, video performance and immersive installation. The educational projects are for media arts professionals, teachers, artists, students and children.

He holds a degree in social and cultural anthropology (Université Laval), another in fine arts and electroacoustic music (Concordia University) and also studied electronic.
