Popcore Duo
The Popcore evenings where born out of the Société des Arts Technologiques’ Mix_Sessions. Popcore later became an independent, open collective proposing multidisciplinary performances with a subversive aesthetic inspired by the transformation of pop culture symbols. The collective presents audacious performances that comprise of portable video games, domestics tools and kitchenware controlled by computers, manipulation of electronic toys, destruction of old mediums and robotic instruments.
Popcore Duo is a subset of this original collective and is composed of Simon Laroche (www.projet-eva.org) and Manuel Chantre. Both evolve as new media artists and performers independently; popcore duo serves as a common experimental radical testing ground for audio, visual and performative work.Since the summer of 2008, they have created a series of varied performances.
POLYPINGPOP
[Participative audiovisual performance, noise / electronic / music, 2010]
A participatory performance, made up of electronic sounds, noise and music. With a deliberately low-tech 12-channel setup, Laroche and Chantre fight one another mercilessly. Caught in the line of fire, the audience takes part in this strange audio battle by using interactive portable speakers. The surreal mood is set by a crescendo of sounds and music.
To play this piece, they us two computers communicating by MIDI, live audio processing, additive synthesis, manual and automated spatialization, as well as infrared trigger systems.
POPCONTINENTAL
[Participative audio performance, narrative / noise / electronic / sensory experience ,2009]
This audio performance presents and deconstructs various rituals while subverting discourses prevalent within mass culture: “ Imagine an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting on board a cruise ship in the middle of a stormy night with a psychotic master of ceremonies, and you’re halfway there. Manuel Chantre and Simon launch into their set with naval peaked caps, inviting the audience to smash a pinata to poppy electro sounds. But the festive mood changes abruptly as, blinking into the penumbra,

POPCORE DUO, eponyme
[Audiovisual performance: noise/minimal/experimental, 2008]
Popcore Duo eponyme is an interactive audiovisual performance inspired by the deconstruction of the body / robot. Chantre and Laroche submerge the audience with a heavy, raw, hypnotic and surgical atmosphere by generating audiovisual material with among other thing, manipulations of interactive dolls. The people in the crowd take part in a segment of this performance.
The performance embodies the traditional laptop setup for digital presentations, and allows the creation of a new coherent space for artistic expression that echoes live cinema, non-linear storylines, science-fiction and classical theater.
Using custom-built softwares, sensors, interactive dolls, lights, a camera, construction hardware and costumes, Popcore Duo creates a dialog between music and visuals, the audience and the performers. It plays on the representation of dolls, plastic objects that evoke strong empathic reactions in people.
The project is the result of a residence at the Society for Arts and Technology and has its roots in the Popcore collective, a group of creators that met through the MixSessions nights at the SAT and that went on to present multidisciplinary performances and improvisations in Canada and Europe.
The piece Popcore Duo form Popcore Duo eponyme “Echanges croises Belgique – Quebec, Festival Transnumeriques – Society for Arts and Technology (SAT)” was realised through a research and creation residence at the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT).

Performance audio « multicanal » participative où les performeurs se livrent à une lutte sans merci, armés de mini haut-parleurs. Le public, placé au centre de l’arène, est invité à prendre part à cette étrange joute de déconstruction sonore. Première au Mois Multi 2010.

POPCORE DUO
[Performance audio-visuelle: noise/minimal/expérimental, depuis 2008]
Popcore Duo est une performance audio-visuelle interactive inspirée de la déconstruction limite du corps-robot. Manuel Chantre et Simon Laroche plonge le plublic dans un univers lourd, brut, hypnotique et médical en générant du matériel audio-visuel à partir, notamment, de manipulations de poupées interactives. Le public participe à une section de cette performance.
La performance est une mise en scène de la performance traditionnelle avec ordinateur portable; ce qui a pour effet de créer un nouvel espace scénique cohérent qui fait écho au nouveau cinéma en direct, aux récits non linéaires, à la science-fiction et au théâtre.
À partir de logiciels faits sur mesure, de senseurs, des poupées interactives, de lumières, d’une caméra, d’une machine de construction et de déguisements, ils stimulent un dialogue entre la musique, le visuel, le publique et la performance. C’est un jeu sur la représentation même de la poupée; un objet de plastique qui suscite de fortes réactions empathiques chez les gens.

Popcore Duo est le fruit d’une résidence d’artiste de quelques jours à la Société des arts technologiques de la formule duo du collectif Popcore. Née en 2006 des soirées Mix Sessions à la Société des arts technologiques, les sept principaux membres du collectif ont proposés des performances et des improvisations multidisciplinaires au Canada et eu Europe.
L’élément performatif est également au cœur de leur démarche afin de rendre la performance avec ordinateur portable plus dynamique. En intégrant à la performance des déguisements, des manipulations en directe d’objets-machines ainsi que de la création en de vidéos, ils souhaitent créer chez l’auditeur un lien entre ce qu’il perçoit et les manipulations de l’artiste.
Pour une premières fois, avec la formule Popcore Duo, le collectif propose une performance plus soignée et plus uniforme autours d’un thème. Généralement, les représentations sont très éclatées au niveau des esthétiques proposés, des thématiques explorées et des objets manipulés par les artsites. Pour le Popcore Duo, l’idée de départ était de créer une ambiance lourde sur le thème de la déconstruction du corps représenté; du corps robotisé.
